Perennials. Flowering culms glabrous, 31–107 cm high. Leaves glabrous or sparsely pubescent to pilose with simple or glandular hairs; blade persistent, flat or involute, finely acuminate to acute. Panicles linear-oblong or ovate or pyramidal, densely contracted, usually longer than wide or sometimes similar in length and width, 1.5–4 (–11) cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide (including awns). Spikelets with 3–5 florets (1 bisexual). Glumes ±equal, 2.3–5.6 mm long, obtuse to truncate or rarely acute, 3–9-nerved, usually scaberulous, glabrous or pilose (hairs simple and glandular). Basal floret: lemma body 2–2.6 (–3.5) mm long, longer than wide, membranous, not ridged at base of lobes, with margins ciliate, prominently 9–11-nerved, with erect hairs arising in the lower 1/2–2/3 and not exceeding the lobe bases; lemma lobes 9, longer than body, with midlobe 2.3–6 mm long; palea slightly exceeding lemma body, membranous, with keels ciliate for upper 1/2–2/3, with body and flaps pilose to pubescent (body rarely glabrous near base). Anthers c. 1 mm long.
