Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Enneapogon

Characteristics

Densely tufted, wiry perennial, 300-650 mm high, sparsely hairy; base usually bulbous, culms erect, unbranched from base to a few centimeters above base, then branching profusely and very leafy, basal internodes long and sheaths tight. Leaf blade 50-200(-250) x 3 mm or filiform, persistent; ligule a fringe of hairs. Inflorescence a dense, spike-like panicle. Spikelet 4.0-7.0 mm long (including awns); glume pallid or grey only in lower part. Florets 3; third floret tiny, reduced to a tuft of awns; lemma not keeled, 9-lobed; lobes awned, awns plumose for 2/3 of their length; anther 1.0-1.5 mm long. Densely tufted usually wiry, sometimes reed-like perennial 300-650(1 100) mm high; base usually bulbous; culms erect, unbranched basally, profusely branching above, upper parts appear very leafy; basal internodes long and sheaths tight. Leaf blade 50-200(-250) x 4 mm, filiform or flat. Inflorescence dense, usually spike-like rarely open but narrow. Spikelet 4.0-7.0 mm long (including awns); 3-flowered, third tiny, reduced to a tuft of awns; glumes pallid or grey only in the lower part; lemma awns plumose for 2/3 of their length; hairs at base of lemma around callus up to 0.8 mm long, mostly shorter; anther 1.0-3.0 mm long.
Perennial; up to 0.65 m high; densely tufted; plant wiry; sparsely hairy. Culms erect; much branched; densely leafy from a few centimetres above base; basal leaf sheaths persistent but not breaking into fibres. Leaf blades 50-200(-250) mm long; filiform or up to 3 mm wide. Flowers: panicle dense; spike-like; unbranched; spikelets 3.5-4.5 mm long; lemma awns hair-fringed; anthers 1.0-2.5 mm long.
Perennial, densely tufted, up to 0.65 m high, wiry, sparsely hairy. Leaf blades 50-200(-250) mm long, filiform or up to 3 mm wide. Culms erect. Spikelets 3.5-4.5 mm long. Panicle dense, spike-like, unbranched; lemma awns hair-fringed; anthers 1.0-2.5 mm long.
Leaf-laminae 5-20(25) x 0·1-0·3 cm., almost always convolute, filiform, very rarely expanded, tapering to a fine point, somewhat rigid, obliquely ascending to erect, usually smooth.
Culm 20-80 cm. tall, few-6-noded, very slender, wiry, arising from a bulbous base, usually branched a few cm. above the base, usually erect, rarely geniculately ascending.
Glumes slightly unequal, scattered-pilose, subacute; the inferior 2.5-5 mm. long, 3-7-nerved, ovate; the superior 3.4-7 mm. long, 3-6-nerved, oblong.
Fertile lemma (the inferior) c. 2 mm. long (excluding the awns), dorsally villous; awns 2-3.5 mm. long, plumose beyond the middle.
A perennial, with a short horizontal rhizome, usually inconspicuously pubescent all over, often appearing glabrous.
Panicle 1.5-12 cm. long, dense, spike-like, compact, rarely interrupted, light to dark grey.
Leaf-sheaths rather tight, finely striate, the lowermost long-persistent.
Spikelets 3.5-4.5 mm. long, 3-flowered, crowded.
Anthers (0.8)1.2-2.2 mm. long.
