Characteristics

Slender, tufted. Flowering culms 44–60 cm high, branched or not. Leaves basal; basal sheaths carinate, tight; orifice bearded, with stiff hairs 0.8–4 mm long; external ligule absent or a ciliolate membrane; blade usually flat, 4–10 cm long, 0.6–1.7 (–2) mm wide. Inflorescences digitate; branches 2–4, 5–11 cm long, usually flexible. Glumes: lower glume 2–3.6 mm long, muticous or aristulate; upper glume 4.1–5.3 mm long, with awn usually less than 1 mm long. Callus 0.8–1.2 mm long. Basal lemma narrowly lanceolate to oblong, 4.8–7 mm long, acuminate, entire or minutely notched, cartilaginous, smooth on surface or scaberulous towards apex; awn much longer than lemma body, 9.5–12.8 mm long. Basal palea usually acuminate.
