Caespitose perennial; culms 30–90 cm. high, wiry, often bare below, much branched, the basal buds clad in short pale cataphylls.. Leaf-blades linear, 5–25 cm. long, flat; sheaths glabrous.. Spike 6–17 cm. long.. Spikelets 2-or sometimes 3-flowered; lemma of lowest floret 4.5–8 mm. long, its awn 1–5 mm. long.
