Characteristics

Tufted perennial; culms up to 1 m. high, wiry.. Leaf-blades involute and filiform or flat and linear, 8–28 cm. long; sheaths laterally compressed and keeled, loosely hirsute, mainly on the margins.. Spike 6–15 cm. long.. Spikelets 3-flowered; lower lemma 5–8 mm. long, bearing an awn 10–20 mm. long.. Fig. 94, p. 334.

Glumes lanceolate, the inferior c. 2.6 mm long, the superior c. 6 mm long; lemma of fertile floret 4.4–7 mm long, with an awn 10–19 mm long; 2nd lemma 1.4–4 mm long, with an awn 7–13 mm long; 3rd lemma (when present) 1–1.5 mm long, with an awn c. 5 mm long.
Caespitose perennial; culms wiry, up to 80 cm tall; leaf sheaths keeled, sparsely to densely pilose, especially on the margins; leaf laminas 8–20 cm × 2–6 mm, involute and filiform or flat and linear.
