Characteristics

Slender perennial 20 cm or more high (10–45 cm high, viz. Jeanes 1996: 941) with ascending stems from a loosely rhizomatous base. Stems with close irregular, curved hairs, occasionally with glandular hairs, and usually retaining dead leaves near the base. Leaves usually opposite, alternate in the flowering region, lanceolate to elliptic, 1–5 cm long, with small shallow regular teeth, tapering to apex and, rather variably, to the base. Flowers with inner surface of hypanthium glabrous. Petals 3.5–7 mm long, white or purplish pink. Capsule 2–5 cm long, closely pubescent; pedicel 1.5–5 cm long. Seeds narrowly obovoid, 1.2–1.3 mm long, comose.
