Perennial; culms tufted, erect, 15-60 cm. high; sheaths glabrous, more or less hairy in the throat, mostly shorter than the internodes; blades rather firm, mostly 5-20 cm. long, 2-4 mm. wide, glabrous or sparsely pilose; panicles 8-30 cm. long, the branches stiffly ascending to spreading, the lower ones sometimes as much as 10 cm. long, pilose in the axils; spikelets 4-5 mm. long, 6-to 12-flowered, rarely more, short-pedicellate, usually crowded, appressed; lemma about 2 mm. long, acute, or subacuminate, scabrous on the keel near the summit.
