Characteristics

Compactly tufted or tussock-forming perennials; rootbase fibrous, glabrous. Culms erect, 34–115 cm high, usually glandular below nodes. Leaves with pitted or warty glands along nerves; ligule ±0.5 mm long; blade straight, to 25 cm long, to 2.5 mm wide, pilose-or warty-tuberculate. Panicles open, 11–42 cm long, 7–17 cm wide, sometimes glandular on axis and lower branches; primary branches thick, rigid, naked in lower part. Spikelets pedicellate, lanceolate or ovate, 6.5–15.5 mm long, 1.6–2.8 mm wide, acute, with median depression, often olive-green; rachilla straight; florets 12–33, becoming loose. Glumes ±equal, ovate to linear-lanceolate, 1.3–2.2 mm long. Lemma oblong or ovate, 2–2.6 mm long, obtuse, cartilaginous, 3-nerved, partly scaberulous, glossy. Palea elliptic to oblanceolate with ciliolate apex; keels thickened towards base; flaps distinctly narrower than body. Stamens 3; anthers c. 0.5 mm long. Grain strongly compressed, oblong-ellipsoid, concave on the back, 0.8–1.2 mm long, reddish brown.
