Robust tufted perennial (base not known); culms 1.2–2.5 m. high.. Leaf-blades up to 60 cm. long, 10 mm. wide, narrow, stiff, harsh.. Panicle narrowly oblong, 30–40 cm. long, dense, not whorled.. Spikelets 5–16-flowered, linear to narrowly oblong, 6–14 mm. long, 1.5–2.5 mm. wide, purplish brown, the florets appressed to the rhachilla or divergent, commencing to break up from the base, but the rhachilla very soon becoming fragile; glumes lanceolate, acute, the lower 2.2 mm. long, the upper 2.5–3 mm. long; lemmas oblong-elliptic, 2.6–3 mm. long, distinctly nerved, narrowly obtuse to emarginate; palea scaberulous on the keels, persistent; anthers 3, 1.5–1.7 mm. long..
