Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Eragrostis

Characteristics

Spikelets 4.5–6 × 1.8–2.6 mm, oblong to ovate-oblong, not compressed, (6)8–13-flowered, tardily disarticulating, if at all, the caryopses shed from the ± persistent floret scales; glumes unequal, narrowly ovate, glabrous, subobtuse at the apex, the inferior 0.8–1(1.5) mm long, scarcely reaching the middle of the adjacent lemma, the superior 1.2–1.6(2) mm long, reaching to beyond the middle of the adjacent lemma; lemmas 1.6–1.9 mm long, dorsally rounded, elliptic to broadly elliptic, thinly membranous with distinct lateral nerves, somewhat diverging from the rhachilla, those in opposite rows scarcely imbricate, the rhachilla visible between them, green or greyish-green to straw-coloured, often tinged with purple, glabrous to softly long-pilose on the flanks, obtuse at the apex; palea glabrous on the flanks, the keels slender, wingless, scabrid, broadly protruding from the sides of the lemma; anthers 3, 0.6–0.9 mm long.
More
Panicle 4–30 cm long, narrowly elliptic to oblong, open or somewhat contracted, the spikelets evenly distributed, the branches and branchlets stiff and straight, clearly demarcated from the filiform pedicels, these 2.5–8 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a slender bristle, the axils of the branchlets and pedicels with a beard of long stiff hairs, this sometimes reduced to a single hair, eglandular.
Densely caespitose perennial without rhizomes or stolons; culms up to 90 cm tall, erect, unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; basal leaf sheaths glabrous at the base (others glabrous to loosely or stiffly pilose), chartaceous, terete, eglandular, disintegrating into persistent fibres; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 3–30 cm × 0.5–1 mm, narrowly linear, tightly involute, pilose to glabrescent.
Caryopsis c. 0.4 mm across, subrotund.
