Characteristics

Spikelets 3–10 × 1–1.5(1.8) mm, oblong to linear, lightly laterally compressed, 4–22-flowered, the florets disarticulating from the apex downwards, the rhachilla fragile; glumes subequal, (0.7)1–1.5 mm long, the inferior reaching to about the middle of the adjacent lemma, the superior relatively shorter, lightly keeled, narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic-oblong in profile, scabrid on the keel, obtuse to subacute at the apex; lemmas (1.2)1.4–1.8 mm long, lightly keeled, narrowly elliptic-oblong in profile, membranous with distinct lateral nerves, scarcely diverging from the rhachilla, those in opposite rows imbricate and concealing the rhachilla, pallid or often tinged with purple, smooth and glabrous, obtuse to truncate at the apex; palea glabrous on the flanks, the keels slender, wingless, scabrid; anthers 3, 0.2–0.6 mm long.
More
Tufted, erect annual to 800 mm high; culm nodes eglandular. Leaf blade to 300 x to 10 mm; glands present on nerves. Inflorescence open, effuse; branches ascending at 45° angles; lowest branches whorled or not whorled; axils long hairy; pedicels 5-25 mm long, slender. Spikelet 3-10 x 1.0-1.5(1.8) mm; rachilla fragile; lemmas and/or paleas breaking up from apex downwards; glumes subequal; lowest glume reaching 1/2 way and more up lemma above, upper glume reaching almost to middle and higher on lemma above; lemma 1.2-1.5 mm long, obtuse to truncate, lateral nerves prominent; palea keels scabrid, margins very wide apart; anthers 3, 0.2-0.3(0.6) mm long; caryopsis subglobose.
Tufted annual; culms 20–80 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades flat, up to 30 cm. long and 10 mm. wide; ligule represented by a line of hairs.. Panicle ovate-elliptic, 15–40 cm. long, effuse, the branches ascending at 45°, bearded in the axils, the spikelets on long fine pedicels.. Spikelets 6–22-flowered, linear, 3–10 mm. long and 1–1.5 mm. wide, often purplish, breaking up from the apex, the rhachilla fragile; glumes narrowly ovate to oblong-elliptic, 1–1.5 mm. long, acute to obtuse; lemmas oblong-elliptic, 1–2–1.7 mm. long, obtuse to truncate; palea scabrid on the keels; anthers 3, 0–2 mm. long.. Caryopsis subglobose, 0.5 mm. long.. Fig. 60/6, p. 190.
Erect, tufted annual, up to 800 mm high. Leaf blade up to 300 x 10 mm; ligule a fringe of hairs. Inflorescence an open panicle, branches ascending at 45 degree angles, bearded in axils; pedicels long and slender. Spikelets 3-10 x 1.0-1.5 mm, laterally compressed; rachilla fragile; lemmas and/or paleas breaking up from apex downwards; glumes shorter than spikelet, 1-nerved. Florets many; lemma obtuse to truncate, entire, 3-nerved; palea keels scabrid; anthers 3, 0.2-0.3 mm long. Flowering time Feb.-June. Caryopsis subglobose.
Annual, tufted (erect), up to 0.8 m high. Leaf blades up to 300 mm long, up to 10 mm wide. Spikelets 3-10 mm long, 1.0-1.5 mm wide. Inflorescence open, branches ascending at 45° angles, bearded in axils, pedicels long and slender; spikelet rhachilla fragile, lemmas and/or paleas breaking up from apex downwards; lemma obtuse to truncate; palea keels scabrid; anthers 3, 0.2-0.3 mm long. Caryopsis subglobose.
Caespitose annual; culms up to 50(100) cm tall, usually erect, unbranched or rarely branched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; leaf sheaths gland-dotted on the nerves (especially on the midnerve); ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 5–20(30) cm × 2–4(6) mm, linear, flat, glabrous, gland-dotted on the nerves beneath.
Panicle 11–30(70) cm long, ovate-elliptic, very effuse, the spikelets evenly distributed on long fine pedicels 5–25 mm long, the primary branches ascending at 45°, pseudowhorled or not, terminating in a fertile spikelet, bearded in the axils, eglandular.
