Spikelets 4-8 x 2.2-3.8 mm wide, laterally compressed, completely pallid or flushed with dark purple; rachilla fragile, lemmas and/or paleas breaking up from apex downwards; glumes shorter than spikelet, 1-nerved. Florets many; lowest lemma broadly obtuse, entire, 3-nerved, lateral nerves conspicuous; palea scaberulous; anthers 3, 1.5 mm long. Flowering time Sept., Dec., Feb.
