Perennial, tufted or arising from a short oblique rhizome; culms 60–100 cm. high.. Leaf-blades flat or rolled, up to 25 cm. long and 2–4 mm. wide.. Panicle ovate-elliptic, 6–20 cm. long, usually loose.. Spikelets 9–24-flowered, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, 4–12 mm. long, (3–)3.5–5.5 mm. wide, the opposite rows of florets not overlapping and the rhachilla ± exposed, greyish green, breaking up from the base, the rhachilla persistent; glumes subequal, lanceolate, 1.5–3 mm. long; lemmas ovate-elliptic and acute when flattened, (2–)2.5–3 mm. long; palea falling soon after the lemma, the keels scaberulous; anthers 3, 1–1.5 mm. long..
