Characteristics

Spikelets 3–9 × 2.5–3 mm, ovate to oblong-ovate, laterally compressed, 6–32-flowered, the florets disarticulating from below upwards, the rhachilla persistent; glumes subequal, 1.5–2 mm long, reaching to just beyond the middle of the adjacent lemmas, keeled, narrowly to broadly ovate in profile, glabrous, acute at the apex; lemmas 1.5–2 mm long, keeled, broadly ovate-elliptic in profile and gibbous on the back, firmly membranous with distinct lateral nerves, diverging from the rhachilla at less than 45°, those in opposite rows imbricate and concealing the rhachilla, yellowish-green tinged with purple or leaden-grey, glabrous, the apex abruptly cuspidate and acute or sometimes obtusely triangular; palea deciduous with or soon after the lemma, glabrous on the flanks, the keels slender, wingless, ciliolate with hairs 0.1–0.2 mm long, these concealed by the sides of the lemma; anthers 3, 0.2–0.3 mm long.
More
Loosely tufted annual; culms 15–70 cm. high, erect or ascending.. Leaf-blades flat, 5–20 cm. long, 2–4 mm. wide.. Panicle ovate, 7–25 cm. long, open, the axis glabrous or pilose, much branched, the spikelets borne on long slender pedicels.. Spikelets 6–30-flowered, ovate to ovate-oblong, 3–7mm. long and 2.5–3 mm. wide, yellowish green tinged with purple, the rhachilla ± covered by the base of the closely imbricate lemmas, breaking up from the base, the rhachilla persistent; glumes subequal, narrowly to broadly ovate, 1.5–2 mm. long, acute; lemmas broadly ovate-elliptic, 1.5–2 mm. long, gibbous on the back, the tip abruptly cuspidate to an acute apex or sometimes obtusely triangular; palea falling soon after the lemma, the keels ciliolate with hairs 0.1–0.2 mm. long; anthers 3, 0.2–0.3 mm. long.. Caryopsis ellipsoid, 0.7 mm. long.
Loosely caespitose annual; culms up to 90 cm tall, erect or ascending, somewhat stout, branched or unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; leaf sheaths glabrous, the lowermost compressed and keeled; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 5–20 cm × 2–4 mm, linear, flat or folded, glabrous, eglandular.
Panicle 7–25 cm long, ovate, open and richly branched, the spikelets evenly distributed on long fine pedicels 5–25 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous or thinly pilose in the axils, eglandular.
Caryopsis 0.7–0.8 mm long, elliptic.
