Characteristics

Perennials, sometimes rhizomatous or stoloniferous; rootbase hairy; cataphylls glabrous. Culms sometimes ascending, 14–60 cm high, wiry. Leaves: sheath much wider than blade at orifice; ligule c. 0.5 mm long; blade setaceous. Panicles usually open, 5–20 cm long, 2–11 cm wide. Spikelets pedicellate, (3.6–) 8–43 mm long, 0.5–2.5 mm wide, biconvex or terete, sometimes curved; rachilla flexuose, persistent; florets 6–70, closely overlapping. Glumes ±equal, ovate, 1–1.8 mm long, cartilaginous. Lemma ovate-oblong, 1.5–2 mm long, obtusely carinate, cartilaginous, 3-nerved, partly scabrous or smooth, dull. Palea: body spathulate or obovate. Anthers 0.4–1 mm long. Grain dorsally compressed or ±terete, 0.5–0.9 mm long, c. 0.3 mm thick.
