Tufted perennial, the basal sheaths ± papery and glabrous or obscurely pubescent at the very base; culms 40–90 cm. high.. Leaf-blades flat or rolled, mostly 10–15 cm. long and 2–3 mm. wide.. Panicle ovate-elliptic, 15–30 cm. long, open; branches spreading, often with the spikelets ± condensed about them, 1–8 at a node but not in obvious whorls; spikelets 5–16-flowered, linear, 4–9 mm. long and 1.5 mm. wide, often somewhat serrate in outline, yellowish to dark green, breaking up from the base, the rhachilla persistent; glumes unequal, often conspicuously so, the lower narrowly lanceolate and 0.2–1.2 mm. long, the upper lanceolate .and 1.2–1.5 mm. long; lemmas ovate-elliptic, 1.6–2.2 mm. long, the back straight and the margins gibbous in side view, ± finely scaberulous, often with the lateral nerves prominent, obtuse; palea falling soon after the lemma, the keels scaberulous; anthers 3, 0.8–1 mm. long.. Caryopsis narrowly oblong to fusiform, 1 mm. long.. Fig. 61/2, p. 193.
Tufted moderately slender, erect perennial to 1000 mm high; basal sheaths glabrous or obscurely hairy, often flushed red; culms not densely compacted at base and easily separable, nodes glabrous. Leaf blade to 150 x 2-4 mm, apex long-tapering. Inflorescence open, moderately branched; lowest branches 1-8, whorled or not whorled; pedicels slender; spikelets adpressed to branches. Spikelet 4-9 x 1.5 mm, linear to oblong; rachilla persistent; lemmas and paleas breaking up from the base upwards; glumes unequal, translucent, lanceolate, keels and apex smooth or scaberulous, 1/3-3/4 the length of lemma above; lemma 1.6-2.2 mm long, purple to violet to green, often yellow especially near apex, nerves usually prominent, strongly keeled, keel prominent along entire length, apex obtuse; palea boat-shaped in profile, margins touching or overlapping along entire length, keels a distinct thin line, scabrid, wingless; anthers 3, 0.8-1.0 mm long; caryopsis narrowly oblong to linear.
Moderately slender, erect, tufted perennial, up to 1 m high. Leaf blade up to 150 X 1-4 mm, apex long-tapering. Inflorescence an open, moderately branched panicle, lowest branches 1-8, whorled or not whorled; spikelets appressed to branches; pedicels (except terminal ones) shorter than or as long as spikelets. Spikelets up to 4-9 x 1.5 mm, linear to oblong, laterally compressed; rachilla persistent, lemmas and paleas breaking up from base upwards; glumes shorter than spikelet, 1-nerved, translucent, smooth or scaberulous on keels and apices. Florets many; lemma entire, purple to violet to green, often with yellow especially near apex, 3-nerved, nerves usually prominent, strongly keeled, keel prominent along entire length; palea margins meeting or overlapping along entire length, keels distinct but a narrow line; anthers 3, 0.8-1.0 mm long. Flowering time Dec.-May. Caryopsis narrowly oblong.
Caespitose perennial without rhizomes or stolons; culms up to 90 cm tall, erect or ascending, branched or unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; basal leaf sheaths glabrous or obscurely pubescent, chartaceous, suffused with red, compressed and keeled, eglandular, persistent or rarely decaying into parallel fibres; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 10–15 cm × 2–3 mm, linear, flat or involute, glabrous, eglandular.
Panicle 15–30 cm long, elliptic-ovate, open, the spikelets loosely condensed about the primary branches on pedicels 1–3.5 mm long, the primary branches 1–8 at a node but not obviously whorled, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous or thinly long-pilose in the axils, eglandular.
