Characteristics

Spikelets 4–17 × 2–2.5 mm, lanceolate to narrowly oblong, laterally compressed, 8–20-flowered, the florets disarticulating from below upwards, the rhachilla persistent; glumes unequal, reaching to 2/3 or 3/4 the way along the adjacent lemmas, keeled, lanceolate in profile, glabrous, acute at the apex, the inferior 1.5–2 mm long, the superior 1.7–2.5 mm long; lemmas 2–2.5(2.7) mm long, keeled, lanceolate in profile, membranous with distinct lateral nerves, diverging from the rhachilla at less than 45°, those in opposite rows not imbricate, the rhachilla visible between them, green, brownish or purplish, glabrous or the keel scaberulous, acute at the apex; palea deciduous with or soon after the lemma, glabrous on the flanks, the keels slender, wingless, scabrid above, ciliate below with stiff tubercle-based hairs, these sometimes very sparse and not always protruding from the sides of the lemma; anthers 3, 0.8–1.2 mm long.
More
Caespitose perennial; culms 30–120 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades flat or rolled, 10–25 cm. long, 2–4 mm. wide.. Panicle ovate to elliptic, 6–25 cm. long, loose or fairly dense.. Spikelets 5–25-flowered, narrowly oblong, 5–12 mm. long, 1–2.5 mm. wide, breaking up from the base, the rhachilla persistent; glumes lanceolate, light brown, acuminate, the lower 1.5–2 mm. long, the upper 1.7–2.5 mm. long; lemmas ovate-elliptic, 2–2.5 mm. long, glabrous, usually purplish, acute; palea falling soon after the lemma, the keel irregularly ciliate with stiff tubercle-based hairs 0.3–0.7 mm. long; anthers 3, 0.8–1.2 mm. long.. Caryopsis linear, terete, 1–1.5 mm. long.
Tufted perennial to 1200 mm high, sometimes geniculate; occasionally rhizomatous; culm unbranched, eglandular. Leaf blade 100-250 x 2-4 mm. Inflorescence open to dense; lowest branches not whorled. Spikelet (4)5-12(17) x 1.0-2.5 mm; rachilla persistent; lemmas and/or paleas breaking up from base upwards; glumes unequal, keeled; lemma keeled, glabrous or with hairs of less than 0.3 mm long, lateral nerves distinct, not reaching beyond margins; palea falling with or soon after lemma, keels wingless, hairs bulbous-based, 0.3-2.0 mm long, extending beyond lemma; anthers 3, 0.8-1.2 mm long; caryopsis linear.
Densely caespitose perennial without stolons but sometimes with short stout rhizomes; culms up to 80(120) cm tall, usually erect, unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; basal leaf sheaths glabrous or puberulous, chartaceous, terete, eglandular, persistent; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 10–15(25) cm × 2–4(6) mm, linear, flat or involute, glabrous or sparsely pilose, eglandular.
Perennial, tufted (sometimes geniculate), up to 1 m high. Leaf blades 100-250 mm long, 2-4 mm wide. Spikelets 5-12 mm long, 1.0-2.5 mm wide, with rhachilla persistent, lemmas and/or paleas breaking up from base upwards; lemma glabrous or with hairs shorter than 0.3 mm; palea keels with hairs 0.3-2.0 mm long, extending beyond lemma; anthers 3.0,8-1.2 mm long.
Panicle 8–25 cm long, ovate to elliptic, dense or fairly loose, the spikelets evenly distributed on pedicels (1.5)2.5–6 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous or long-pilose in the axils, eglandular.
Caryopsis 1–1.5 mm long, linear.
