Characteristics

Tufted perennial; culms 30–110 cm. high, wiry, erect.. Leaf-blades flat or rolled, 10–25 cm. long, 2–2.5 mm. wide.. Panicle linear, 12–25 cm. long, with irregularly disposed branches 1–5(–7) cm. long, these ascending close to the axis and densely spiculate to the base; lateral pedicels up to 1 mm. long.. Spikelets 12–40-flowered, linear, 5–16 mm. long, 1–1.8 mm. wide, greyish green, breaking up from the base, the rhachilla persistent; glumes ovate, the lower 0.7–0.8 mm. long, the upper 1–1.1 mm. long; lemmas broadly ovate-elliptic, 1.2–1.5 mm. long, thinly cartilaginous with broad white lateral nerves, sometimes thinly pilose on the margins, bearing a shallow gland on the keel; palea scaberulous on the keels, persistent; anthers 3, 0.4 mm. long..
