Characteristics

Erect, tufted perennials. Flowering culms 32–36 cm high; culms semi-terete (furrowed on one side). Leaves: ligule a fringe of hairs, to 2 mm long; blade flat, 3–9 cm long, 2–2.5 mm wide. Panicles open, 6–7 cm long, 3–4 cm wide; branches epulvinate. Spikelets pedicellate, broadly ovate to orbicular, not compressed, 3–4 mm long and wide, similar in length and width, inflated; pedicels glandular with one gland or eglandular; rachilla flexuose; florets (3–) 6–9, closely overlapping. Glumes persistent, ±equal, 1.6–2 mm long, with apices reflexed or straight, carinate, glabrous, pale mauve; upper glume lanceolate, coriaceous, attenuate (with apex reflexed). Basal lemma ovate or obovate, 1.5–1.6 mm long, obtuse, granular, pallid. Palea subequal to lemma, membranous, elliptic; keels winged, scabrous-ciliolate on wings. Lodicules present. Stamens 3; anthers 0.7 mm long. Grain not seen.
