Caespitose perennial without rhizomes or stolons; culms up to 75 cm tall, erect, wiry, unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; basal leaf sheaths with vestigial lemma, loosely imbricate and scale-like forming a sub-bulbous base to the lowermost 2–2.5 cm of culm, glabrous, chartaceous, terete, eglandular, persistent; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas up to 9 cm long and 0.5 mm in diameter, tightly involute and filiform, glabrous, eglandular.
Panicle 2.5–6.5 cm long, linear with appressed racemose branches below, racemose above, the few spikelets on pedicels 2–3 mm long, the primary branches remote, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous in the axils, eglandular.
