Characteristics

Slender compactly tufted shortly rhizomatous perennials, pilose or hispid with tubercle-based hairs on culms and foliage, eglandular; rootbase knotted or thickened; cataphylls ciliate on keel. Culms erect, 30–60 cm high, filiform. Leaves: sheath abruptly wider than blade; ligule 0.1–0.2 mm long; blade tightly involute, flexuose, filiform. Panicles open, 13–23 cm long, 8–14 cm wide; peduncle and axis pilose or hispid; primary branches without spikelets in lower quarter. Spikelets longpedicellate, linear or lanceolate, 4.5–12.5 mm long, 1–1.5 mm wide; rachilla flexuose; florets 8–24, finally loosely overlapping. Glumes ±equal, ovate-lanceolate, 1–1.5 mm long. Lemma lanceolate, 1.5–1.8 mm long, acute, membranous, 3-nerved, scabrous near apex or smooth. Palea: body spathulate, c. 2/3–3/4 length of lemma, glabrous or ciliate at apex; keels scaberulous towards apex or smooth; flaps distinctly narrower than body. Stamens 3; anthers 0.2–0.3 mm long, purple-black. Grain quadrangular, oblong, 0.6–0.8 mm long, grooved or concave, curved, reddish brown.
