Characteristics

Spikelets 3–10 × 1–1.5 mm, linear, often curved, laterally compressed, 5–20-flowered, the lemmas tardily disarticulating from below upwards and the rhachilla soon becoming fragile; glumes subequal, 0.7–1.4 mm long, reaching the middle of the adjacent lemmas, keeled, lanceolate-ovate in profile, glabrous, subacute at the apex; lemmas 1.5–1.9 mm long, keeled, narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic-ovate in profile, membranous with distinct lateral nerves, diverging from the rhachilla at less than 45°, those in opposite rows not imbricate, the rhachilla visible between them, purplish-brown, glabrous, acute at the apex; palea persistent, glabrous on the flanks, the keels slender, wingless, scaberulous; anthers 3, 0.6–0.9 mm long.

Mat-forming perennial with long slender rhizomes; culms 10–40 cm. high.. Leaf-blades short, flat or sometimes rolled, 2–8 cm. long, 1–3 mm. wide, distichous, glaucous.. Panicle ovate, 2–8 cm. long, stiffly branched.. Spikelets 5–20-flowered, linear, 3–10 mm. long, 1–1.5 mm. wide, purplish brown, tardily commencing to break up from the base, but the rhachilla soon becoming fragile; glumes narrowly ovate, subequal, 0.7–1.3 mm. long; lemmas ovate, 1.5–1.7 mm. long, acute; palea scaberulous on the keel, persistent; anthers 3, 0.6–0.9 mm. long.. Caryopsis ellipsoid, 0.6 mm. long.. Fig. 62/9, p. 196.
Mat-forming perennial with long slender rhizomes; culms up to 40 cm tall, erect, branched at the base, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; basal leaf sheaths glabrous or pilose, chartaceous, terete, eglandular, persistent; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 2–8 cm × 1–3 mm, linear, usually flat, distichous, glaucous, glabrous or thinly pilose, eglandular.
Panicle 2–8 cm long, ovate, open and stiffly branched, the spikelets ± evenly distributed on pedicels 0.5–2 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous in the axils, eglandular.
