Spikelets 3-5 x 3-4 mm, broadly ovate to oblong, laterally compressed, pallid, green to dark grey; rachilla extremely fragile, breaking up from apex downwards; glumes shorter than spikelet, 1-nerved. Florets many; lemma obtuse to rounded, entire, 3-nerved, lateral nerves distinct; palea broadly elliptic to round, keels entire, shortly ciliolate; anthers 3, 0.8-1.3 mm long. Flowering time July-May. Caryopsis broadly elliptic.
