Panicle 5–25 cm long, narrowly ovate, open, the spikelets evenly distributed, the branches and branchlets stiff and straight, clearly demarcated from the filiform pedicels, these 5–8 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a slender bristle or abortive spikelet, thinly pilose in the axils, eglandular.
Densely caespitose perennial without rhizomes or stolons; culms up to 90 cm tall, erect, unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; basal leaf sheaths glabrous, chartaceous, terete, eglandular, persistent; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 6–30 cm × 1–2 mm, linear, involute or rarely flat, loosely pilose.
Caryopsis 0.6–0.7 mm long, narrowly elliptic.
