Characteristics

Spikelets 4–9 × 3–5 mm, narrowly ovate, ovate or ovate-oblong, lightly laterally compressed, 10–26-flowered, the florets disarticulating from below upwards, the rhachilla persistent; glumes subequal, 2–3 mm long, reaching to c. 2/3 the way along the adjacent lemmas, lightly keeled, narrowly ovate in profile, glabrous, acute at the apex; lemmas 2–2.7 mm long, dorsally ± rounded, broadly ovate-elliptic, gibbous on the back, firmly membranous with distinct lateral nerves, diverging from the rhachilla at c. 45°, but those in opposite rows imbricate and concealing the rhachilla, greyish-green to dark green, glabrous, the surface granular, the apex abruptly cuspidate and acute or sometimes obtusely triangular; palea deciduous with or soon after the lemma, glabrous on the flanks, the keels slender, wingless, ciliolate with hairs 0.1–0.2 mm long (the hairs not always well developed in the lower florets), these not protruding from the sides of the lemma; anthers 3, 0.5–0.7 mm long.
More
Loosely tufted perennial; culms 15–90 cm. high, erect or geniculate.. Leaf-blades flat, 3–15 cm. long, 2–5 mm. wide.. Panicle ovate, 4–22 cm. long, spreading or somewhat contracted, much branched, the spikelets borne on long slender pedicels.. Spikelets 10–26-flowered, narrowly ovate, ovate or ovate-oblong, 4–9 mm. long, 3–5 mm. wide, greyish green to dark green, the rhachilla ± covered by the base of the closely imbricate lemmas, breaking up from the base, the rhachilla persistent; glumes subequal, narrowly ovate, 2–3 mm. long, acute; lemmas broadly ovate-elliptic, 2–2.7 mm. long, the surface ± granular, rounded and somewhat gibbous on the back, the tip abruptly cuspidate to an acute apex or sometimes obtusely triangular; palea falling soon after the lemma, the keels ciliolate with hairs 0.1–0.2 mm. long (these not always well developed in the lower florets); anthers 3, 0.–5–0.7 mm. long.. Caryopsis ellipsoid, 0.8–1.2 mm. long.. Fig. 60/10, p. 190.
Tufted perennials. Culms erect, often ribbed or grooved, 65–90 cm high. Leaves sometimes pilose with long tubercle-based hairs; sheaths overlapping or not; ligule a ciliate membrane (in Australia), 0.3–0.4 mm long; blade flat and to 5 mm wide or loosely rolled, straight. Panicles open, sparse, 22–30 cm long, 12–20 cm wide, scaberulous; branches divided, naked in lower part. Spikelets longpedicellate, usually ovate, 4–9 mm long, 3–4 mm wide; rachilla straight, thick; florets 10–23, closely overlapping, falling entire. Glumes ±equal, ovate-lanceolate, 2–2.5 mm long. Lemma ovateelliptic, inflated, c. 2.5 mm long, acute to obtuse, curved on back, membranous. Palea ±hyaline; body obovate-elliptic, apically ciliolate; keels shorter than body, ciliate with stiff hairs; flaps to half the length of the keels, auricle-like, notched. Stamens 3; anthers 0.5–1 mm long. Grain not compressed, subulate or terete, curved, 1–1.2 mm long. Pericarp free on moistening.
Loosely caespitose perennial without rhizomes or stolons; culms up to 90 cm tall, erect or ascending, unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; basal leaf sheaths glabrous, chartaceous, compressed and keeled, eglandular, persistent; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 3–15 cm × 2–5 mm, linear, flat, puberulous above, eglandular.
Panicle 4–22 cm long, ovate and spreading, sometimes somewhat contracted, the spikelets evenly distributed on slender pedicels 2–25 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous in the axils, eglandular.
Caryopsis 0.8–1.2 mm long, elliptic.
