Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Eragrostis

Characteristics

Spikelets 6.5–8.5 × 4.5–7 mm, broadly ovate, strongly laterally compressed, 5–9-flowered, disarticulating below the glumes and falling entire; glumes subequal, 3.2–4.5 mm long, reaching to just beyond the middle of the adjacent lemmas, keeled, lanceolate in profile, glabrous, subacute at the apex; lemmas 4.3–5.2 mm long, keeled, lanceolate in profile, subcoriaceous with conspicuous lateral nerves, diverging from the rhachilla at c. 45° but those in opposite rows imbricate and concealing the rhachilla, green tinged with brownish-purple, narrowly winged and scabrid on the keel, narrowly obtuse at the apex; palea glabrous on the flanks, the keels somewhat thickened and cartilaginous, winged throughout, the wing protruding from the sides of the lemma, the wing margin irregularly lacerate and minutely ciliolate; anthers 3, c. 0.5 mm long.
More
Tufted annual to 400 mm high. Leaf blade to 150 x to 4 mm. Inflorescence 30-80 mm long; lowest branches not whorled; pedicels stout. Spikelet to 8 x 6-7 mm; strongly laterally flattened, sides appear jagged; disarticulating below glumes at maturity, falling entire as a unit; glumes subequal, keeled; lemma lanceolate in profile, keel winged, scabrid, lateral nerves distinct; palea keels ± thickened, broadly winged, usually irregularly lacerate (jagged), protruding laterally from lemma; anthers 3, 0.5 mm long; caryopsis elliptic to broadly elliptic.
Caespitose annual; culms up to 40 cm tall, erect or ascending, unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; leaf sheaths glabrous, eglandular; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 2.5–15 cm × 2–4 mm, linear, flat or involute, glabrous, firm and somewhat glaucous.
Panicle 3–8 cm long, narrowly oblong, subracemose but the lower branches bearing 2–3 imbricate spikelets on stout pedicels 1–5 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a fertile spikelet, loosely pilose in the axils, eglandular.
Caryopsis 1.2–1.5 mm long, elliptic to broadly elliptic.
