Characteristics

Caespitose perennial from a short underground rhixome; culms 50 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades flat, up to 10 cm. long and 3 mm. wide.. Panicle narrowly ovate, 7–11 cm. long, lax, the branches flexuous and nodding; pedicels slender, 4–12 mm. long.. Spikelets 5–8-flowered, ovate, 6–9 mm. long and 4–6 mm. wide, purple, breaking up from the base, the rhachilla persistent; glumes subequal, lanceolate, 4–5 mm. long, 1–3-nerved, acute; lemmas ovate-elliptic, 4–5 mm. long, membranous, neither granular nor rounded on the back, obtuse to truncate; palea falling soon after the lemma, the keels smooth; anthers 3, 2.5 mm. long.
