Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Eragrostis

Characteristics

Spikelets 2–3.5 × 1.8–2 mm, broadly ovate to broadly oblong, moderately laterally compressed, 6–20-flowered, the florets disarticulating from the apex downwards, the rhachilla fragile; glumes subequal, 1.1–1.5 mm long, reaching to the apex of the adjacent lemmas and sometimes beyond, lightly keeled, lanceolate in profile, glabrous, acuminate to a minute awn-point at the apex; lemmas 1.2–1.4 mm long, lightly keeled, oblong-elliptic in profile, membranous with distinct lateral nerves, somewhat diverging from the rhachilla, those in opposite rows not imbricate, the rhachilla visible between them, purplish, smooth or scaberulous, truncate at the apex and often distinctly mucronate (but apparently not so in the Flora Zambesiaca area) and sometimes the lateral nerves excurrent; palea glabrous on the flanks, the keels slender, wingless, ciliate with stiff tubercle-based hairs 0.5–0.7 mm long; anthers 3, 0.5–0.7 mm long.
More
Tufted annual; culms 25–60 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades flat, 4–17 cm. long, 3–8 mm. wide.. Panicle broadly linear to narrowly oblong, 6–30 cm. long, fairly dense with the spikelets evenly distributed, with or without glandular patches on pedicels and branchlets, these sticky or not; primary branches numerous, stiff, ascending at 45° to the main axis.. Spikelets 6–20-flowered, broadly ovate to broadly oblong, 2–3.5 mm. long, purplish, breaking up from the apex, the rhachilla fragile; glumes narrowly ovate, subequal, 1.5 mm. long, acuminate to a brief awn-point; lemmas oblong-elliptic, 1.2 mm. long, glabrous or scaberulous, truncate, usually distinctly mucronate, sometimes the lateral nerves also excurrent; palea-keels ciliate with stiff hairs 0.5–0.7 mm. long; anthers 3, 0.7 mm. long.. Caryopsis narrowly ellipsoid, 0.6 mm. long.. Fig. 60/3, p. 190.
Panicle 6–30 cm long, broadly linear to narrowly oblong, fairly dense (more open in shade) with stiff ascending branches, the spikelets evenly distributed on short pedicels 0.6–1 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous in the axils, the branches and pedicels with glandular patches, these sticky or not.
Loosely caespitose annual; culms up to 60 cm tall, erect, unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, with non-sticky glands below the nodes; leaf sheaths eglandular; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 4–17 cm × 3–8 mm, linear, flat, glabrous or thinly pilose, eglandular.
Caryopsis c. 0.6 mm long, narrowly elliptic.
