Densely caespitose perennial without rhizomes or stolons; culms up to 60 cm tall, erect, unbranched, glabrous at the nodes, eglandular; basal leaf sheaths glabrous, broadly chartaceous, terete, eglandular, disintegrating into a cushion of coarse persistent fibres; ligule a line of hairs; leaf laminas 5–10 cm long, 0.5–0.7 mm in diameter, tightly involute-setaceous, glabrous, eglandular.
Panicle 3–6.5 cm long, sparse, linear and contracted, the spikelets in remote groups of 2–3, the ‘pedicels’ 0.5–2.5(10) mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous in the axils, eglandular.
