Tufted slender perennials, eglandular; cataphylls chartaceous, glabrous, glossy. Culms erect, 35–95 cm high. Leaves mostly glabrous and smooth; ligule 0.1–0.3 mm long; blade rolled, sometimes flat and to 2.8 mm wide, straight, scaberulous above, scabrid and ±hairy on margins. Panicles open, (10–) 25–33 cm long, 6–8 cm wide; branches spreading to drooping, sometimes naked in lower part. Spikelets pedicellate, linear, biconvex to flattened, 5.4–30 mm long, 0.8–1.5 mm wide; rachilla zig-zagged; florets 10–61, closely overlapping or loosely overlapping in lower part and partly exposing rachilla. Glumes unequal, linear-lanceolate; lower glume 0.9–1.5 mm long; upper glume 1.2–1.8 mm long. Lemma lanceolate, 1.5–2 mm long, acuminate to obtuse, membranous, 3-nerved, with lateral nerves often green. Palea: body spathulate, c. 2/3–3/4 length of lemma; keels sometimes sparsely scaberulous towards apex; flaps distinctly narrower than body. Stamens 3; anthers 0.2–0.4 mm long. Grain linear-oblong, biconvex, 0.5–0.8 mm long, white-striate. Pericarp free on moistening.
Occurs nearseasonally wet, stillwater habitats and on flood plains and damp flat ground inalluvium, sand and black clay soils.
