Perennials, often purplish near base. Culms erect or stoloniferous, 22–60 cm high. Leaves mostly glabrous and smooth; sheaths not quite overlapping; ligule 0.1–0.3 mm long; blade flat or involute, straight, acute. Panicles loose to open or spiciform towards apex, 4–14 cm long, 2–7.5 cm wide; primary branches stiffly spreading to reflexed, undivided, entirely spikelet-bearing. Spikelets very shortly pedicellate, stiffly spreading or reflexed, strongly laterally compressed, linear, 7–21 mm long, 1–1.5 mm wide; rachilla flexuose, thick, constricted at lemma base; florets 9–27, closely overlapping. Glumes unequal, linear-lanceolate to ovate, membranous to almost indurated; lower glume 0.7–1.3 mm long, nerveless; upper glume 1.1–2 mm long. Lemma lanceolate, 1.7–2 mm long, obtuse, membranous to almost indurated, 3-nerved. Palea ±equal to lemma; body oblong or spathulate; keels shorter than body, scaberulous upwards; flaps much narrower than body. Stamens 3; anthers 0.3–0.5 mm long. Grain strongly laterally compressed, narrowly ovoid, biconvex or planoconvex, longer than wide, 0.7–0.9 mm long, reddish brown.
