Characteristics

Spikelets 4.2–7.5 × c. 1 mm, oblong-linear, laterally compressed, 5–8-flowered, the florets disarticulating from below upwards, the rhachilla tough at first but becoming fragile; glumes subequal, 1.3–1.7 mm long, the inferior reaching from 2/3 to 3/4 the way along the adjacent lemma, the superior to 1/4 or 1/2 the way, keeled, narrowly lanceolate in profile, glabrous, subacute at the apex; lemmas 1.6–1.9 mm long, keeled, narrowly elliptic-oblong in profile, membranous with indistinct lateral nerves, appressed to the rhachilla, those in opposite rows not imbricate, the rhachilla visible between them, greyish-green below, purple above, glabrous, obtuse at the apex; palea deciduous with or soon after the lemma, glabrous on the flanks, the keels slender, wingless, smooth and glabrous; anthers 3, 1–1.2 mm long.

Panicle 5.5–16 cm long, ovate, loose and open, the spikelets evenly distributed on pedicels 0.8–3.5 mm long, the primary branches not in whorls, terminating in a fertile spikelet, glabrous in the axils, with inconspicuous crateriform glands singly near the insertion point of the branches, branchlets and pedicels, and usually in pairs at the distal end of the pedicels.
