Perennials. Culms erect or decumbent, 22–41 cm high, wiry. Leaves mostly glabrous; ligule c. 0.2 mm long; blade flat or involute, straight, to 7 cm long, 1–3 mm wide. Panicles loosely contracted, ovate, 5–9 cm long, 3–6 cm wide, sometimes pruinose or glaucous; axils usually with prominent bearded pulvini; branches stiffly spreading, spikelet-bearing from or near axil. Spikelets shortly pedicellate, linear, 4–9 mm long, 1.6–2.4 mm wide; rachilla zig-zagged, thick; florets 8–21, becoming loose and partly exposing rachilla. Glumes unequal or ±equal, ovate, cartilaginous; lower glume 0.8–1.8 mm long; upper glume 1.5–1.8 mm long. Lemma ovate, c. 1.8 mm long, acute or acuminate, cartilaginous, 3-nerved. Palea c. 2/3 as long as lemma; body spathulate-oblong; keels thick, scaberulous except near base; flaps much narrower than body. Stamens 3; anthers c. 0.3 mm long. Grain laterally compressed, oblong, oblong-ellipsoid in T.S., c. 0.6 mm long, reddish brown.
