Characteristics

Perennials; rootbase hirsute; cataphylls mostly glabrous. Culms 50–60 cm high, very slender. Leaves: sheath much wider than blade at orifice; orifice stiffly bearded at margins; ligule 0.8–1 mm long; blade tightly involute or convolute, very slender, capillary towards apex. Panicles loose to open, 20–30 cm long, 7–14 cm wide; branches often drooping. Spikelets pedicellate, 4–4.5 mm long, 0.3–0.5 mm wide, biconvex, stiffly spreading, sometimes cleistogamous; rachilla flexuose; florets 9–11, loosely overlapping at maturity and partly exposing rachilla. Glumes ±equal, lanceolate or the lower glume linear-lanceolate, 0.8–1 mm long, hyaline or membranous, deciduous (often early). Lemma ovate-elliptic, 0.9–1 mm long, obtusely carinate, membranous, 1-or 3-nerved (often obscurely). Palea: body oblanceolate to obovate; keels scaberulous near apex or smooth. Stamens 3; anthers 0.1–0.2 mm long. Grain dorsally compressed, flat or depressed on the back, 0.4–0.5 mm long, 0.2–0.3 mm thick.
