Slender compactly tufted perennials. Culms filiform, 16–30 cm high. Leaves: sheaths usually not overlapping; ligule 0.3–0.5 mm long; blade tightly convolute, curled or flexuose, filiform, pilose, partly scabrous. Panicles contracted, open to rather dense, 6–10 cm long, 3–4.5 cm wide; axils with glabrous or pubescent pulvini; branches spreading to divaricate, divided, entirely spikelet-bearing. Spikelets shortly pedicellate, laterally compressed or biconvex, linear, 5–13.5 mm long, 1–1.3 mm wide, sometimes cleistogamous; rachilla wavy, slender; florets (9–) 22–31, finally somewhat loose. Glumes ±equal, linear-lanceolate (or upper glume broader), 1–1.3 mm long, membranous. Lemma lanceolate, 1–1.8 mm long, entire or notched, obtuse, sometimes mucronulate, membranous to cartilaginous, 1-or 3-nerved. Palea c. 3/4 length of lemma; body spathulate or obovate; keels strongly curved, scaberulous upwards; flaps much narrower than body. Stamens 2 or 3; anthers 0.1–0.2 mm long. Grain trigonous, ovoid-ellipsoid, plano-convex or grooved on back, 0.3–0.6 mm long, strongly curved in profile, glossy, with a minute stipe.
