Perennial; up to 0.6 m high; tufted; erect. Leaf blades up to 150 x 2-3 mm wide. Flowers: panicle lax to dense; sparsely branched; spikelets congested; spikelets 3-5 x 2.5-3.5 mm; basal sheaths glabrous; or if hairy not with long-woolly hairs for a distance up along sheaths; spikelets with rachilla fragile; lemmas and/or paleae breaking up from apex downwards; glumes boat-shaped; acute to subacute; palea obtuse to rounded; keels with lower portion very wide and protruding from rest of keel; top of projecting portion rounded or shallowly notched; ciliolate; lemma keels and lateral nerves eglandular; anthers 3; 0.7-0.8 mm long; caryopsis elliptic.
