Eriachne axillaris Lazarides

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Eriachne

Characteristics

Slender annual or (?)ephemeral plants 15–25 cm high. Culms simple, filiform, glabrous; nodes pubescent. Leaves partly glabrous or hispid with tubercle-based hairs, usually scabrous; sheaths much shorter than culm internodes; blade to 25 cm long, filiform, with scattered tubercle-based hairs on margins. Inflorescences terminal and axillary; terminal panicle open, 2–3 cm long, 1–2 cm wide, with prominent glabrous pulvini, florets not seen; axillary panicles (usually 2 in each axil) of 3–5 spikelets on 2–8 mm long pedicels and subtended by bladeless sheaths. Glumes c. 3 mm long, muticous or mucronulate, 7–9-nerved, smooth, glabrous. Florets of axillary panicles cleistogamous, exceeding glumes by c. 0.5 mm. Callus entirely bearded. Lemma 3.5–4.3 mm long (including 0.6–1 mm long awn), membranous, 5-nerved, without grooves, hirsute in lower 1/4–1/2 with erect hairs, glabrous and smooth above, ciliate on margins in lower 1/2–2/3. Palea 3–3.2 mm long, entire, muticous, pubescent all over or in the lower c. half, glabrous and smooth above. Caryopsis 1.5–1.7 mm long.
