Characteristics

Slender perennial plants 15–42 cm high; base thickened by sheaths, glabrous. Culms simple, strongly striate, pilose or hispid with tubercle-based hairs; nodes bearded. Leaves densely hispid with tubercle-based hairs; sheaths less than half as long as culm internodes; blade curved and flexuose, to 23 cm long, stiffly setaceous. Panicles loosely contracted, 3–5 cm long, 0.5–1 cm wide. Glumes 3–4.3 mm long, muticous or cuspidulate, 7-nerved, smooth, glabrous. Lemma 6–8 mm long (including 1–1.5 mm long awn), membranous to cartilaginous, 5-nerved (sometimes obscurely), without grooves, shortly or sparsely hirsute in lower 1/5–1/2, glabrous and smooth above. Palea c. 6 mm long, entire or bifid, with indumentum similar to lemma in lower 1/2–2/3 or almost glabrous, scaberulous near apex. Caryopsis not seen.
