Perennial plants (7–) 15–30 (–40) cm high; base slightly thickened, sparsely pubescent (cataphylls glabrous). Culms usually simple, glabrous or the lower internodes pubescent; nodes glabrous or sometimes pubescent. Leaves mainly basal and glabrous; sheaths shorter than culm internodes; blade 2–4 cm long, setaceous, scaberulous, sometimes sparsely pilose with tubercle-based hairs. Panicles open, (1–) 2–4 (–5.5) cm long, (0.5–) 1–2 (–3) cm wide. Glumes obliquely attached (distant by c. 0.5 mm), slightly unequal, 2–5 mm long, muticous, 7–9-nerved, smooth, glabrous. Florets exceeding glumes by up to 1 mm. Callus entirely bearded. Lemma 2.5–c. 6 mm long, acute to acuminate, muticous or sometimes with cusp to 0.8 mm long, cartilaginous, obscurely 5–7-nerved, without grooves, pubescent or pilose in lower 2/3–3/4 with often sparse hairs, glabrous and smooth or scaberulous above.
