Characteristics

Perennial plants 23–50 cm high; base knotty, densely pubescent or hirsute. Culms fastigiately branched at all nodes, glabrous; nodes glabrous. Leaves: sheaths overlapping, ciliate on upper margins with tubercle-based hairs, glabrous on surface or hispid to pilose in upper part; blade to 9 cm long, densely scabrous on upper surface, glabrous or pilose with tubercle-based hairs below, with margins scabrous. Panicles spiciform, 3.5–4 cm long, 0.3–0.5 cm wide. Glumes 4–4.7 mm long, muticous, 9-nerved, minutely scaberulous between nerves or smooth, glabrous. Florets exceeding glumes by c. 2 mm. Callus bearded, with a minute glabrous tip. Lemma c. 5 mm long, awned, membranous with hyaline margins, 7-nerved, bisulcate between second and third nerves from margins, sparsely hairy near base (appearing hirsute in lower 1/3 from callus hairs), glabrous and smooth above or scaberulous near apex; awn 3–4 mm long. Palea c. 6 mm long, acuminate into shortly bifid beak c. 0.5 mm long, long-pubescent or glabrous. Caryopsis 2.7–3 mm long.
