Characteristics

Perennial plants 50–80 cm high; base pubescent. Culms branched, fastigiate, glabrous; nodes glabrous. Leaves smooth, mainly glabrous; sheaths usually much shorter than culm internodes; blade 16 cm long, to 1.5 mm wide. Panicles open, 6.5–10 cm long, 3–7.5 cm wide, with prominent pulvini. Glumes obliquely attached, 2.8–3.8 mm long, muticous or rarely mucronulate, 9–11-nerved, smooth or sometimes scabrous, glabrous. Florets subequal to glumes (usually slightly longer). Lemma 3–3.5 mm long, acute, muticous or with mucro to 0.8 mm long, membranous, faintly fewnerved, without grooves, hirsute in lower 2/3–3/4 with hairs sometimes reaching or exceeding apex, glabrous and scabrous above. Palea entire, muticous, similar to lemma in indumentum. Caryopsis 1.5–1.8 mm long.
