Perennial plants (30–) 45–60 cm high; base thickened, usually woolly. Culms basally branched or simple, usually hispid with prickly tubercle-based hairs; nodes glabrous or pubescent or bearded. Leaves sparsely or densely hispid with prickly tubercle-based hairs, sometimes tuberculate only or glabrous; sheaths much shorter than culm internodes; blade to 18 cm long, setaceous, densely whitescabrous. Panicles loose to open, 6–10 cm long, 2.5–6 cm wide, with prominent pulvini. Glumes slightly unequal, 2.6–5 mm long, muticous, 9–11 (–13)-nerved, smooth, glabrous. Florets exceeding glumes by 0.5–1.3 mm. Callus entirely bearded. Lemma (3–) 3.5–5 mm long, acuminate, muticous or sometimes cuspidulate, membranous with hyaline margins, 5-nerved, without grooves, hirsute with simple hairs in lower 1/3–1/2 with hairs almost reaching apex, glabrous above, scaberulous near apex or smooth, with submargins ciliate usually almost to apex. Palea entire, muticous, hirsute on body almost to apex. Caryopsis 1.6–2 mm long.
