Perennial plants 45–105 cm high, somewhat glaucous; base thickened or knotty, pubescent. Culms simple or sparsely branched, glabrous; nodes glabrous. Leaves usually glabrous, sometimes hispid; sheaths much shorter than culm internodes; blade to 20 cm long, to 3 mm wide, scaberulous, with tubercle-based hairs on margins. Panicles becoming open, 5.5–10 cm long, 3.5–6 cm wide, usually with long-bearded prominent pulvini. Glumes muticous or rarely cuspidulate, 5–7-nerved, smooth, glabrous; lower glume 4–4.6 mm long; upper glume 4.2–5.3 mm. Florets slightly shorter than longer glume. Callus entirely bearded. Lemma 4–5 mm long, acuminate, muticous or rarely cuspidulate, cartilaginous with narrow hyaline margins, 5-nerved, not grooved, hirsute in lower 2/3 with hairs sometimes almost reaching apex, ciliate on submargins to apex. Palea 4–5 mm long, entire, muticous, usually with a basal tuft of hairs and hirsute or pubescent on lower 1/3–2/3, glabrous above. Caryopsis 1.8–2 mm long.
