Delicate annual or ephemeral plants 4.5–15 cm high. Culms branched, glabrous; nodes glabrous. Leaves stiffly pilose or hispid with simple and tubercle-based hairs; sheaths much shorter than culm internodes; blade to 2.5 cm long, to 1.5 mm wide. Panicles open, 3–6 cm long, 1–4 cm wide; axils often bearded, with prominent pulvini. Glumes 1.5–1.8 mm long, muticous or cuspidate (cusp to 0.5 mm long), 3-nerved (usually ribbed), hispid or stiffly pilose with simple or tubercle-based hairs; upper glume often less hairy than lower glume. Florets subequal to glumes (usually slightly shorter). Callus entirely bearded. Lemma 1.3–1.8 mm long, awned, membranous, faintly 3-nerved (visible on inside), striolate, without grooves, pilose near margins in lower 1/2–3/4 or almost glabrous, ciliate on margins to apex, otherwise glabrous and smooth; awn 3.3–5.5 mm long. Palea entire, muticous, glabrous, striolate. Caryopsis c. 1 mm long.
Grows in damp orseasonally wet sites, in shallow or deep sand or organic matter, often in ornear small watercourses or in seepage, and sometimes in cracks in sandstone escarpment,rock faces, and on outcrops.
