Characteristics

Perennial plants 38–90 cm high. Culms simple, hispid to hirsute with tubercle-based hairs or glabrous; nodes bearded. Leaves hirsute to hispid with tubercle-based and simple hairs or glabrous; sheaths from less than half as long to almost as long as culm internodes; blade 17–30 cm long, to 3 mm wide, with margins scabrous. Panicles dense, c. 3 cm long, c. 1.5 cm wide. Glumes 9–11 mm long, with beak almost as long as body, 5–7-nerved, hirsute with tubercle-based hairs. Florets shorter than glumes. Lemma 2.5–6 mm long, awned, abruptly narrowed at awn junction, 5–7-nerved, without grooves (sometimes with 2 shallow apical depressions), densely hirsute with hairs exceeding lemma apex; awn c. 25 mm long, twice curved to strongly recurved. Palea c. 5.5 mm long (body), with beak 3–5 mm long and bifid into 2 awns 1–5 mm long, hirsute or pubescent between keels. Caryopsis c. 2.3 mm long.
