Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Ericaceae > Erica

Characteristics

Compact, but sparse, or spreading shrublet to 150 mm tall, single-stemmed reseeder. Branches: few erect main branches with 4-6 secondary flowering branchlets 2-10 mm long, pubescent, the younger with a few short gland-tipped hairs, younger nodes slightly swollen, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 3-nate, spreading to reflexed, 0.25-1.5 x 0.25-1.0 mm, broadly elliptic, much rounded ad-and abaxially with no distinct margins, narrowly sulcate, acute or obtuse, glabrous the younger occasionally with a few sessile glands laterally, sometimes with a long apical seta; petiole adpressed, 1 mm long, ciliate. Inflorescence: flowers 3-nate in 1 or 2 whorls, when 2 then umbel-like, terminal on main and secondary branchlets, the flowers all agglutinated together; pedicel 0.5-0.7 mm long, puberulous; bract partially recaulescent, approximate and adpressed to calyx, 1.3 x 0.7 mm, broadly ovate narrowing to the foliaceous upper half, acute, sulcate, base sometimes overlapping bracteoles, glabrous with puberulous base, ciliate sometimes with a few sessile glands on upper margins and adaxially, green to reddish; bracteoles 2, approximate and adpressed to calyx, 0.7 x 0.4 mm, otherwise like bract. Calyx 4-lobed, 0.5-1.0 x 0.8 mm, cyathiform, puberulous, green; lobes 2/3 the length of calyx, deltoid acute, broadly sulcate as long as the lobe, densely clothed with large sessile glands adaxially, agglutinated to corolla, sparsely ciliate. Corolla 4-lobed, 3-4 x 2 mm, obovoid to tubular-campanulate, smooth, extremely viscid, pink to whitish; lobes erect or slightly spreading, 0.4 mm long, deltoid-acute. Stamens 4, free, exserted, sometimes reflexed; filaments as long as corolla or a little longer, linear broadening at apex, straight, glabrous; anthers basifixed, spurless, elliptic, dark red-brown; thecae 1.0 x 0.5 mm, oblong-elliptic, smooth or slightly aculeate-papillate; pore 1/2-1/4 as long as theca; pollen in monads. Ovary 1(2)-locular, 0.7 x 0.4 mm, asymmetically ovoid, subacute, glabrous, with large basal nectaries; ovule 1, pendulous, placenta apical; style far exserted up to 2x as long as corolla, filiform, glabrous; stigma simple truncate or capitate. Fruit indehiscent, asymmetrically broadly ellipsoid, 1.0 x 0.8 mm; pericarp thin, brittle with very slightly thickened endocarp, many crystals; seeds broadly ellipsoid, testa thin, cells elongate with slightly thickened jigsawed anticlinal walls, with large pits to slits.
