Characteristics

Upright shrub up to 45 cm (1 1/2 ft) with subglabrous branches. Leaves 4-nate, 4-6 mm long, linear to narrow-elliptical with longish, pale petioles, erect, imbricate, sulcate, hirsute. Flowers axillary at the ends of the branches, often dense and subcapitate; peduncles up to 4 mm long, hirsute, red; bracts median, hirsute, red. Sepals about 4 mm long, ovate-lanceolate or lanceolate-acuminate, keel-tipped, hirsute. Corolla 4-6 mm long, broad-campanulate, glabrous, red or pink; lobes continuous, broadly rounded, about equal to the tube. Filaments flat, dilated above; anthers included, 1 mm long, oblong to deltoid, obtuse and with a small blunt, prognathous point in front, dark-coloured, appendiculate; pore 5/8 the length of the cell, broadly elliptical; awns broad at the base, decurrent along the filaments for 1/4 of their length then spreading, about equal to the cell in length. Ovary turbinate, densely villous; style included; stigma capitate.
