Characteristics

Erect fastigiate shrub up to 0.5(-1) m tall, single-stemmed reseeder. Branches: many long erect main branches with numerous short lateral flowering branchlets 1-20 mm long, pubescent, the hairs spreading, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 3-nate, erect to adpressed as long as internodes, 2.0-3.0 x 0.5 mm, lanceolate to oblong, adaxially flat glabrous or puberulous, abaxially acute, narrowly sulcate, scabrid, occasionally puberulous usually more so towards the margins, apex acute often with tuft of hairs, margins acute shortly ciliate and with minute sessile glands intermixed; petiole adpressed, 0.5 mm, puberulous. Inflorescence: flowers 3-nate in 1 or 2 whorls, umbel-like when 2-whorled, terminal on main branches or secondary branchlets; pedicel very short, 0.1-0.2 mm long, glabrous or puberulous; bract partially recaulescent, approximate to the calyx, 0.5-1.0 x 0.2 mm, oblong, apically narrowly sulcate, bracteose, white, glabrous to sparsely puberulous, long ciliate and with sessile glands intermixed; bracteoles 2, approximate, like the bract but slightly shorter. Calyx 4-lobed, 1.4-1.8 x 1.0 mm, narrowly cyathiform, subacute angular opposite the lobes with semi-transparent scarious deep grooves, glabrous or pubescent or pilose in grooves and down the angles only, greenish white; lobes erect, 1/3-1/2 as long as calyx, narrowly deltoid, subacute to acuminate, narrowly sulcate for their length, often green, long ciliate and with small sessile glands intermixed, often with an apical tuft. Corolla 4-lobed, 1.8 x 0.8 mm, tubular-cyathiform, usually just slightly longer than calyx, minutely colliculate to smooth, glabrous, whitish to deep pink; lobes erect, 0.2 mm long, rounded, erose. Stamens 4, free, exserted; filaments just longer than the corolla, linear, straight; anthers subbasifixed, narrowly obovate, muticous or spurred, dark reddish brown; thecae 0.8-1.0 x 0.2 mm, oblong, rough not aculeate, spurs (when present) about 0.1 mm long, linear acuminate, arising from junction of filament and thecae, pendulous; pore 1/4-1/5 as long as theca; pollen in monads. Ovary 2-locular, 0.5 x 0.3 mm, ellipsoid, obtuse, basally glabrous, apically puberulous, with no nectaries; ovules 1 per locule, pendulous, placenta apical; style exserted, just longer than the stamens, glabrous; stigma broadly cyathiform to peltate. Fruit indehiscent, 2x as long as ovary; pericarp thin and papery, with many crystals; seeds oblong-ellipsoid, testa thin, cells elongate with undulate anticlinal walls, with no pits. Flowering time: November to March with occasional flowers together with fruits in later months.
