Species

Angiosperms > Ericales > Ericaceae > Erica

Characteristics

Dense erect shrub up to 1[-2]m tall, single-stemmed reseeder. Branches: numerous erect slender main branches usually continuing vegetative growth, with many flowering secondary branches 1-2 mm long, branches pubescent with simple hairs sometimes becoming stellate, grey with age, no infrafoliar ridges. Leaves 3-nate, erect to semispreading, 3.0-5.0 x 0.4-0.5 mm, oblong to lanceolate, adaxially flattened, abaxially rounded and narrowly sulcate, edges acute, apex acute, glabrous, apically puberulous becoming setose, ciliolate becoming strigose; petiole adpressed, 0.5-1.2 mm long, glabrous, ciliolate. Inflorescence: flowers (1-)3-nate in 1 whorl, terminal on very short lateral branchlets crowded towards the ends of branches; pedicel 0.15-0.2 mm long, glabrous or puberulous; bract fully recaulescent as abaxial lobe of calyx; bracteoles 2, fully recaulescent as lateral lobes of the calyx. Calyx 4-lobed, equally to unequally so, 0.6-1.0 x 1.4 mm long, from 1/4-1/2 length of corolla, often 4-ridged with ridges opposite the lobes, colliculate, glabrous to sparsely pubescent; lobes 1/3-1/2 the length of calyx, broadly ovate-acute, the abaxial from equal to 2x the length of the others and with attenuated apex, all apically sulcate and keeled, shortly ciliate often with minute sessile glands interspersed. Corolla 4-lobed, 1.0-1.2 x 0.8 mm, obovoid, papery, glabrous or sparsely pubescent or colliculate to papillate, yellowish green turning white with age; lobes ±1/4 the length of corolla, broadly deltoid, acute to subacute, incurved, glabrous or occasionally puberulous, erose to ciliolate. Stamens (4)5 or 6(7)[8], included; filaments free or very slightly and irregularly connate at base, 0.3-0.5 mm long, glabrous, straight, semitransparent; anthers adhering laterally, bilobed, dorsally attached near base, subquadrate, muticous; thecae erect, parallel, adpressed, 0.7-1.0 mm long, elliptic, glabrous with tuberculate apex; pore 1/3, the length of theca; pollen in tetrads. Ovary 1-locular, 0.5-0.5 mm, globose, upper half slightly ridged and lower half minutely and irregularly verrucose, apex obtuse, pubescent in upper half, no nectaries present; ovule 1, pendulous, placenta apical; style eccentrically placed and bent backwards to central position, very short, 0.2-0.3 mm long, glabrous or puberulous; stigma manifest, 0.8 mm wide, broadly cyathiform-funnelshaped with erect margins becoming incurved, puberulous on underside, red. Fruit indehiscent, 1 x 1 mm, globose, smooth to slightly verrucose; pericarp hard due to thickish mesocarp with many crystals, endocarp very thin adhering to testa; seed globose, with thin yellowish sclerified testa, testa cells subequal to elongate, radial walls slightly to markedly jigsawed, with scattered medium-sized pits.
