Erect shrub up to 60 cm (2 ft) or so. Branches generally virgate, puberulous. Leaves 3-nate, 2-3 mm long, erect-spreading, crowded, mostly linear, sulcate, pubescent, more rarely 3-5 mm long, broad-linear, slighdy open-backed. Flowers terminal, 3-nate; peduncles 2-3 mm long pubescent; bracts remote, small. Sepals i-rjmm long, reaching from the height of the corolla, broad-ovate, blunt, keeled, viscid-puberulous or shortly tomentose, ciliate, foliaceous. Corolla 2-3 mm long, cyathiform, broad-cyathiform or subcampanulate-cyathiform with mouth a little widened or sometimes not so, the outline curved and not tapering direct from the base, glabrous, mostly dull red, sometimes purple or pink. Anthers usually just manifest, more rarely subexserted, o-8 mm long, lateral, curved-oblong, very obtuse, minutely scabrid, appendiculate; pore \ the length of the cell; awns J-| the length of the cell, subulate, ciliate. Ovary turbinate, pubescent; style well-exserted; stigma capitellate, small.
